A substantial number of enterprises in Russia's military-industrial complex were fully or partially privatized and converted to civilian production in the 1990s. Russia’s abundant mineral reserves have given rise to a vast mining and extraction industry alongside its oil and natural gas industries. The country’s vast forests underpin a large timber-related industry. Russia is focusing on value addition for its commodity-based sectors. Russia inherited well-functioning defense, aeronautics, and chemicals industries from the Soviet Union, which continue to grow. It is at par with the United States in the space industry (manned flights, space stations). Ranks first in the world in gas generation and second in petroleum and round wood production. Ranks third in the world in cast iron, fertilizer, building brick, and beer production, and in electricity generation. Ranks fourth in steel and sugar output.
