EU economies have switched from manufacturing to services. Services represent over 60% of the GDP in the four large EU countries: Germany, France, UK, Italy. The EU retail sector is very developed, representing 10% of GDP and 10% of total employment. The EU has the world’s largest logistics services providers. Many knowledge sectors are concentrated in the EU: aerospace, mechatronics, robotics, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, new materials, environmental protection, alternative energies. Germany has the most advanced companies for cars, machine-tools, chemicals and alternative energies (wind, solar). Italy and Spain are world leaders in fashion and design-related industries. France has the world’s leading companies in cosmetics and food processing. UK has world famous companies in banking, insurance, and shipping. Europe is home to both the world’s oldest and some of the world’s newest commodity exchanges (LME, LIFFE, International Petroleum Exchange, Eurex, Aalsmeer, Rungis).
